To Facebook or Not to Facebook

Should a school district's leadership be nervous about creating a Facebook page? We were looking at creating a Facebook page for our high school, and it seems that we have hit a road block...we would like to be able to post without receiving comments from fans of our page. I have not been able to find a setting that would allow me to completely turn off the comment feature...I am not sure that I want to. I think that providing information, reminders of events, and highlights of the great things that our teachers and students are doing far outweighs any negative press you may receive through the comment section of a Facebook page. Moreover, you could simply delete the comment or ban the person from being a "fan" of your page if you don't mind violating the 1st Amendment...If anyone knows how to turn the comments off, please let me know.

  1. Our district has decided to move forward with a Facebook page for our high school. It was decided by district leadership that the pros outweighed the cons...

  2. The local paper ran a story regarding the Facebook page at our HS and we now have over 400 "fans" of our page. I am planning on coordinating with the HS Facebook team to increase the interactivity...perhaps we need to post more pics and videos of upcoming events. All very positive so far.

  4. Presenting an update to the school board next Monday...our school's Facebook page now has over 1000 fans. Community response has been wonderful and we continue to receive positive comments and feedback regarding our move to Facebook. Recent posts included information about a play at the HS, movie night at the Aquatic Center, and a college night hosted by the counseling department.
